Gout was once called the "disease of the rich" because of all the rich foods rich people eat. Gout was known for its
severe pain and disabling pain. Herbs were used to treat gout long ago.
Gout attacks happen because of: obesity, heavy alcohol intake, hypertension, kidney problems; certain drugs like niacin,
aspirin, diuretics, tuberculosis medications; certain diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma; and hemoglobin
disorders. Herbal treatment for gout can bring relief.
More than 3 million people in America suffer from gout. Men are 10 times likely to suffer from gout than women.
Specifically, gout prevails in males past puberty, with a peak age of 78; gout generally occurs in women after menopause. To many, herbal treatment of gout is unknown.
Once you have been attacked with gout, you are more apt to live with more outbreaks. Outbreaks can be alleviated
using herbs to treat a gout ailment.
Gout causes: obesity, joint injury, fever, alcohol consumption, surgery, chemotherapy, crash diets, and heavy
eating.
High levels of uric acid are the primary cause of gout. How much uric acid within the body is determinedby two
factors: 1) the balance between the amount being made and 2) the amount being excreted. Uric acid crystals are put on the cartilage of
joints, tendons, and tissues because of elevated levels of uric acid in the blood. This causes an inflammatory reaction that's usually
associated with gout - pain.
Uric acid is created when purines (any group of organic compounds containing two
combined rings of carbon and nitrogen atoms) are reduced by enzymes in the liver. Purines have main features: the body itself or purine-rich
foods (red meat, alcohol, anchovies, sardines, yeast, organ meat - like liver and brain, legumes, meat gravies, mushroom, spinach, asparagus,
cauliflower, and beer). These foods are not to be consumed because they are high in purine and promote gout.
The kidney causes 1/3 of uric acid excretion and the gut causes for the rest. Kidney dysfunction may be responsible for the predisposition for oncoming gout.
Milk products, red berries, tofu, cherries, and fatty acids found in salmon, flax or olive oil, or nuts. There are foods
that will protect you from grout.
Further, gout sufferers should eat a diet that's high in complex carbohydrates, foods like whole grains, fruits,
and vegetables; foods low in protein, like soy, lean meats, and poultry; and foods lower than 30% fat.
Gout sufferers suffer excruciating, instant and unexpected pain. The pain is so intense and
sensitive that even a blanket over the joint can bring a man to tears. The joint is inflamed, red, stiff, and warm. Sufferers may also
experience feverish conditions.Though gout inflammations happen in the big toe biggest part of the time, the feet and kneecaps are next in
line. Gout also inflames fingers and the body joints. Gout usually infects only one joint and then another.
Gout pain will go on for weeks, sometimes months.
Only your doctor can accurately determine your symptoms. Your doctor may prescribe a
physical exam and medical history, blood tests, and a joint fluid test to find out if you are suffering from gout. Self-diagnosis quizzes are
available online, but it's important to let a professional make the final diagnosis.
Gout is not found in younger humans. Those under 40 have little to fear from gout.Gout is referred to as pseudogout. Pseudogout is over accumulation of calcium phosphate.
Gout can progress to four stages:
Asymptomatic hyperuricemia (an excess of uric acid in the blood) is when elevated levels of uric acid are
present, but there are no other symptoms.
Acute gout (or acute gouty arthritis) is when there is over deposit of uric acid in the joints. Severe
pain and inflammation takes place in the joints. Attacks happen occur at night. Anxiety, illness, alcohol,
or drugs increase gout attacks. Attacks last for days and the next attacks are not apt to happen for months or years. However,
afflictions will go on and occur more often.
Interval gout is the time between gout attacks. Normal joint function takes over and there are no
signs
.Chronic tophaceous (a chunky solid formation that forms in the soft tissue of a
joint) gout is the most suffering stage. This stage doesn't happen over night; it can take ten years to happen… Then, there is undoable
damage to the infected joint and maybe the kidneys. If people use the tips above, they won't have to suffer this stage of gout.
Prevention is the key to treating gout
To actively ward off gout attacks, care must be given in the following areas: Lose
weight, watch what you eat, drink plenty of water, limit alcohol use and medications. Consider herbs as a treatment. Weight loss should mean
watching your food intake and exercising regularly…Do not eat the purine-rich foods that bring on and aggravate gout afflictions.Drinking
full amounts fluids are effective to stop gout because fluids reduce formation of kidney stones. Reduce alcohol consumption.Non-prescription
drugs help manage the pain and anti-inflammatory agents decrease joint pain… In very rare situations, surgery has been performed to stop
future gout afflictions.Besides being aware of these factors, it's important to know as much as possible about gout. You should be aware of
your health condition… Take a proactive position for your well-being. Learn all you can about gout.
The herbs listed below have a proven history for relieving and treating gout symptoms:
Turmeric is the bright yellow herb used in Indian cooking, and in many curries.
It has achieved recognition as a potent anti inflammatory, and many people with a variety of gout and arthritis conditions use it, as well as
other systemic inflammatory diseases. Most of the research has been done on curcumin , an extract derived from Turmeric. You can increase
your consumption by including it as a regular spice in food, or take the curcumin extract as a tincture or as a capsule made from the
extract. A capsule that just contains ground turmeric root is less likely to be absorbed effectively. The fresh
herbal root is often available in Indian grocery stores. A poultice of this on sprains or breaks has been seen to greatly reduce swelling
and significantly aid in healing.
Ginger is a common name for a few types of herbal
plants. In this case, I am referring to Zingiber, the root commonly found in the produce section of the co-op. I use the whole root and
always keep some in the freezer so it is on hand. There is a growing body of evidence supporting ginger’s anti-inflammatory action including
for gout and osteoarthritis. I make a strong tea by simmering about 2 inches of chopped root in about a quart of water in a covered pan for
15-20. You can drink the resulting tea or apply it as a compress by dipping a cloth in the tea and applying it to the affected area for about
20 minutes. If you choose to drink it you can add honey or lemon, and kids may enjoy it cold with some sparkling water. In the cold and flu
season ginger is also a must for sore throats and sinus infection or blockage
Slippery elm bark is a less well known but a powerful herb especially for gout
inflammation affecting the digestive system. I’ve seen ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, and colitis respond quickly and powerfully to the
soothing and healing affects of slippery elm. As little as 1-2 Tablespoons a day in water or juice or sprinkled over cereal can have a
healing affect. It tastes pleasant, a bit like malt. Long used as an ingredient in sore throat remedies it can do wonders further along the
digestive tract as well. There are dozens of additional herbs that can be used, and when combined with dietary and lifestyle changes many
inflammatory conditions – both short term and chronic – can be helped. We are learning more about the long term detrimental effects of
chronic inflammation and prevention is an important goal as well. Whether your goal is healing or prevention consider herbs your allies to
restore you body to a healthy balance… It's also known as metabolic arthritis.
