Herbal treatment for kidney ailments has existed for many hundreds of years. Most of today's modern kinds of medicines have their origins in
herbal plants used to treat kidney ailments. Listed below are a few of the most effective herbs used in treating
a variety of kidney illness:
(Amygdala)
Action: Diuretic
Uses: Coughs, Hoarseness, Kidneys Problems, irritated skin conditions, urinary problems.
Almond oil is sweet and acts beneficially on the urinary organs and is good for stopping painful urine
flow. Also good for hoarseness and nagging coughs and when combined with other ingredients is used to soften and heal advese skin problems.
Various kidneys troubles can be alieved using sweet almond oil. Beware, oil from bitter almonds is poisonous
and only the oil from sweet almonds should be used. If in doubt, consult a doctor or herbal expert.
Blue Cardinal Flower(Herbs)
Blue Lobelia(Lobelia Syphilitica)
Action: Emetic, Cathartic.
Uses: Blood diseases, Kidneys problems, Dropsy, Gonorrhea, Syphilis.
Same species as lobelia inflata. The herbs grow throughout the United States in moist environments. Has
long, spiked blue flower and its juices are milky with a rank odor. The roots have fine white fibers. Native Americans used this herb to treat
blood diseases and other ailments. Promotes kidneys health and acts on kidneys to produce more urine. Good for dropsy and gonorrhea. The root is
the part used as medicine and the dose is from 20 to 60 grains (a pile of powdered herb the size of a match head) of the powdered root 3 to 4
times a day. It can be combined in infusion with other blood and kidneys remedies such as the herbs prickly ash, stillingia, red clover, and
sarsaparilla, and is then used for treating syphilis.
Barberry(Herbs)
(Berberis Vulgaris)
Action: Tonic, Diuretic
Uses: Kidneys troubles, Urinary problems, Kidneys stones, Gall Bladder stones.
This is a shrub which rises from 4 to 8 feet in height and has long bending branches and many thorns. The
herbs have egg-shaped leaves, yellow flowers and many oblong red berries which hang in loose bunches from the plants. Found on hills and
mountains from Canada to Virginia, it flowers in April and May its fruit ripens in June. The bark of the stem and root are the parts used to make
the medicine. It is a tonic and diuretic and is especially good for kidneys troubles, cloudy urine, diminished
urine, pain in passing urine and backpain. It is also good for kidneys and gall stone problems. The tea of Barberry is made from the bark and
is one of the best kidneys remedies known. The dose is from 1 to 4 teaspoons 4 times a day. If using extract rather than the tea, the dose is
from 10 to 30 drops, 3 to 4 times a day. The tea is made by using from 1 to 2 ounces of the bark to one pint of boiling water. This herbs healing
properties have been well-known and used by the native americans.
Bearberry(Herbs)
(Arbutus Uva Ursi)(Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi)
Also called: Red Berry, Mountain Box, Wild Cranberry
Action: Astringent, Tonic, Antilithic
Uses: Kidneys problems, Bladder problems and Urinary troubles, Diabetes, Diarrhea,
Dysentery, Excess of Menses, Gonorrea, Gleet.
These herbs grow in North America and Europe. They are evergreen shrubs or vines. The leaves are oval,
toothed, of a pale-green color and smooth on the underside. The flowers are whitish, terminating from the stem in clusters of six to eight flower
heads. The berries are of a scarlet color and contain 5 seeds. These herbs grow in the mountains and dry uplands all over the United States. Good
treatment for debilitating discharges and particularly for kidneys, bladder and urinary passage problems. Good for diabetes, diarrhea, dysentery,
excess of menes, chronic kidneys and bladder troubles, chronic gonorrhea and gleet. In making the decoction use and ounce of the leaves to one
and one-half pints of water and boil down to a pint of water. The dose is one-half to 3 ounces or half a
small glassful 3 to 4 times a day. The dose of the powder is from 5 to 10 grains and the fluid extract from one-half to one dram.
Blue Flag(Herbs)
(Iris versicolor-Iris/ Pseudo-Acorus)
Also called: Flag Lilly, Liver Lilly, Flower de Luce
Action: Emetic, Cathartic, Diuretic, Alterative.
Uses: Bilious Sick Headaches, Dropsy(swollen tissues)Scrofula, Syphilis, Chronic Kidneys and
Liver Diseases.
The herbs are found in moist places and on borders of lakes and ponds. Blue Flag is a very attractive wild
flower. Flowers are violet-blue and variegated with greenish-yellow and white, with purple veins. Flowers bloom in May and April.The fresh
powdered root of the Blue Flag is an emetic and cathartic. It acts very decidedly on the liver and is a
diuretic and alterative. The root loses its effectiveness with age and exposure to light and air. Immediately after the herb is dug and cleaned,
bruise it and infuse in spirits of alcohol to make a tincture; or, after carefully cutting out the dead matter and cleaning the root, dry it
quickly before a fire, pulverize and bottle it tight for future use. Use a dark colored glass bottle for storage of this herb.
As a cathartic give 20 grains of the powder and repeat if necessary. The dose of tincture made from the
fresh root is 10 drops. It is very good in 1 drop does for headache. For dropsy give 10 grains of the powdered root every 2 hours; or, combine it
with the herbs turkey corn and snake root for use as a watery cathartic. For anasarca and water on the chest use the saturated tincture of the
root. Give a teaspoonful every 2 or 3 hours until the bowels move freely. Blue Flag is good for scrofula and syphilis and can be combined with
the herbs mandrake, black cohosh and poke root for this treatment.
In chronic kidneys and liver diseases, from 5 to 10 grains of the powdered root given 3 to 4 times a day
is very good. For powerful alterative action use equal parts of blue flag, mandrake and prickly ash bark. give 10 grains every 2 or 3 hours. This
treatment sometimes produces pain and in some peopl; to avoid this, add a few grains of ginger powder to the mixture. This is a great treatment
for the kidneys.
